If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."<br>-C.S. Lewis''</center> |

Lynette, a figure from Arthurian legend, is a noblewoman who travelled to King Arthur's court on behalf of her sister Lyonesse, whose lands were under attack by the Red Knight. She refused to reveal her name to the court, and was thus sent away with a kitchen servant -- who was secretly Gareth of Orkney. Lynette left Arthur's court in a huff, and proceeded to attempt to drive the man she knew as Beaumains away from her with insults. But as Beaumains proves himself in battle, Lynette grows to respect him; as they traveled, he was knighted by Sir Lancelot. When they arrived at Lynette's castle, Beaumains defeated the Red Knight, and Lynette nursed him back to health. Here, the story splits. In the original legend, Gareth fell in love with her sister, Lyonesse, and when they travel back to Arthur's court Lynette falls in love with Gareth's older brother; in Alfred Tennyson's poem, he instead fell in love with Lynette herself. Lynette appears as a woman in medieval noblewoman's clothing, who wields a knight's sword.
