Some characters may possess a custom ability, which takes up one of their discretionary ability slots. Created and named by the player, its construction follows a few guidelines which will be detailed in this newsfile.

All characters at least at the level of 'Custom' may have a custom ability. This includes Custom-level Personas, but also includes Shadow-Possessed.

A custom ability is not mandatory. A player may opt to take any ability instead, so long as it meets the rank requirements. However, any specific custom ability is unique to a particular character. A character may not take any other character's custom ability, though the effects may be similar or the same.

A custom ability may be of high or standard rank. They are built like a special, with high allotted 7.5 points and standard allotted 4.5. Almighty abilities cost one extra point, and there may be no more than five tags on any ability.

A few examples are included below. For point costs, see the next page in this file.

Examples

A character wants to create the ability Volcanic Blast. They decide that it will be an attack of high rank and of the Fire element, and they would prefer it to be Physical. They also decide that they would like it to do Earthsplit (0 points) and that they would like to apply Burn and Stone. They settle on Burn2 (1 point) and Stone1 (0.5 points). This gives them, out of 7.5 points, 6 points to place into the damage the attack deals for a final result of: Physical, Fire 6, Earthsplit Burn2 Stone1

A character would like to create the ability Great Shield. They decide that what they want is to create a high rank defensive move centered around the three physical elemental walls, and for use on themself only. This gives them a pool of 8.5 points instead of 7.5 thanks to the Self tag (-1 point). Unfortunately, taking all three at 3-odds would be 12 points, which is more than they can afford. Even taking all three at 2-odds is more than 8.5 points (they are 3 points apiece), so they instead take all three at 1-odds. This costs them 4.5 points, leaving them with four points to spend. They decide on Rakukaja3 (4 points) for a final result of: Recovery, Heal 0, Rakukaja3 Strikewall1 Slashwall1 Piercewall1 Self
