Until recently, Rem Sakurazuki Hoshii--known legally as Sakura Hoshii--was a young woman in a persistent vegetative state after a terrible car accident over a year ago. Although the diagnosis after that year passed and several treatments proved unsuccessful was that she would almost certainly never wake back into full consciousness, a recent experimental procedure awoke Rem fully back to the real world, something even modern Japanese medicine has trouble with. However, while she was once vivacious and feisty, she's now transformed into a significantly shyer, more demure, but still kind and energetic girl with a mysterious air. Struggling with the expectations of her parents and society at large, Rem has given herself a new name to represent her new lease on life, introduced promptly upon her transfer into Gekkoukan High to make up her final year of high school.

Rem Sakurazuki Hoshii--known legally as Sakura Hoshii--has lived a life both unfortunate and blessed. She survived a car crash, entered a persistent vegetative state for over a year, and then awoke and was able to enter Gekkoukan High, graduate, and squeak into Fra Mauro University with a lot of hard work and a scholarship from the Kirijo Group. In truth, though few know it, her body is not originally her own; it houses the mind of a former Kirijo Group experiment named Nagisa Renge. Once resigned to her face of death, love, patience, and friendship brought her to a point where she accepted a desire to live. Now that she has a chance to live out a full life and has, though the awakening of her Persona, accepted that she is who she believes she is, Rem looks forward to the future with curiosity, verve, passion, and wonder, wrapped up in kindness, innocent worldliness, and much more wisdom than a girl her age should have... even if she still struggles with her grades, home life, and society in general.
